Last Orders At The Spinning Disc: What's Happened to Record Shops?

Part One: The Glory Days
Part Two: Struggle For Survival

Durng a special BBC Radio 2 series, record producer Pete Waterman examined the history of independent record shops, looking at why so many record shops have recently vanished and what the future holds for them.

In the first programme, Pete looked at how record shops have had a unique place in people's hearts. They have been social hang-outs, places of education, reflections of the changing world outside and shrines to music. The story that he told encompassed sentiment, snobbery, commerce, technology, fashion and the enduring truth that most people can name the first record they ever bought.
Together with DJs Johnnie Walker, Annie Nightingale and Don Letts; music writer and former record seller David Hepworth; hip hop artist Dan Le Sac and Katrina Leskanich of Katrina and the Waves; Pete looked back at the wood panelled HMVs of the 20s and 30s, and at the Woolworths stores of the 50s and 60s. He also traced the explosion of the pop market in the 60s, through Liverpool's NEMS, where store manager Brian Epstein first heard the word "Beatles". During the shows, Pete investigated the snobbish appeal of the hipster outlets, and talked to Richard Branson about the opening of the first Virgin shop on London's Oxford Street in the early 70s. He explored how the "megastore" approach irrevocably altered not just the British record stores, but also the entire music industry.

The series told the story of how record stores evolved from shops frequented simply to purchase recorded music, into so much more, and evoked a time when record stores were the nerve centre for fans, a hotbed of hype where the latest cuts could springboard local bands into national fame.

Pete's New Book!

As many of you will know, as well as being a hugely successful record producer, Pete is also a dedicated railway and railway modelling enthusiast. Fuelled by his first job at Leamington Railway Station, Pete has a passion and enthusiasm for the railways, owning significant collections of both historic and commercial railway locomotives.
His new book 'Just Like the Real Thing' tells the story of how he and a team of dedicated modellers have built one of the most impressive model layouts in the country. At an incredible 90 feet in length, he covers all aspects of building his layout of Leamington Spa station and gives tips on how to create all aspects of model railways to the very highest standard - a subject very close to his heart.
Having worked with some of the finest modellers in the business, Pete's models and layouts are renowned for their high quality, accuracy and attention to detail and in this, his latest book he takes the reader through the whole modelling process step by step. Following the success of A Train is for Life, Pete's latest book gives tips on a wide range of modelling topics, from locomotives and rolling stock to track, signalling, scenery and buildings, from painting to model construction.
Fully illustrated with colour photographs throughout, Just Like the Real Thing is a rare glimpse into Pete Waterman's world of railway modelling, brimming with practical tips and hints from the master craftsman, including the now renowned singing of teddy bear fur to create grassed embankments and cuttings.
